Same Sex Marriage in the US Essay The contention over the authorization of same sex relationships is quickly getting one of the most vivaciously upheld change subjects in ongoing law audit. Being gay and adoring somebody isn't illicit, however joining that couple in a lawful marriage is dismissed by a large portion of society in this nation. Each state has needed to manage legitimate issues concerning same sex union with some degree. Most supporters of the prohibition on gay relationships accept that it would be a solid reason for unethical behavior and debasement of the American family. Individuals who don't bolster same sex relationships accept that it would make an undesirable family, and could make genuine damage kids in that family, while supporters of same sex relationships accept that they are being denied the advantages, for example, setting up a privilege of survivorship, co-accomplice clinical and retirement benefits. It is felt by most gay people that these advantages would help make a more grounded soundness in a drawn out relationship. The greater part of the volunteer and money related help against gay marriage originates from strict gatherings or houses of worship. Catholics, Mormons, and evangelists make up in excess of 40 percent of Californias populace, and raised a large number of dollars to pass the revision. Same sex relationships are both intellectually and truly wrong in the psyches of most parishioners. They discover the idea corrupt in light of the fact that as per the Bible, sex between individuals from a similar sex is carefully restricted, significantly less marriage. Suggestion 22 was one of numerous battles drove by strict moderates, which forbids California from permitting conjugal rights to gay couples who wedded in another state, and it just perceives relationships among man and a lady. Since, a few houses of worship have strict functions for same sex couples, they are not viewed as a strict holy observance. As per a bipartisan gathering called the California Protection of Marriage Initiative, Marriage ought to be saved for what it is: An indispensable relationship between a man and a lady. The conviction behind this suggestion is that it asserts the key job among man and lady in our general public. Suggestion 22 supporters denied any enemy of gay thought processes, and said the objective was to let Californians characterize marriage for themselves. Strict traditionalists accept that if a gay couple were to wed, the following stage is have kids. Since there is no regular route for two individuals of a similar sexual orientation can consider a youngster, they would need to embrace, or planned impregnation for some lesbian couples. Despite the fact that, there have been late principles and guidelines which have been made with the sole motivation behind forestalling selection for gay couples. Moderates who bolster the restriction on same sex relationships accept that kids set in a gay family unit would be unendurably bothered by other kids, and would endure however a ton of enthusiastic worry throughout their youth. Perhaps in any event, having the dread that a hetero kid experiencing childhood in a gay family unit may inevitably turn gay later on. Be that as it may, the greater part of all, since preservationists accept firmly in the custom family, it is felt that youngsters growing up with gay guardians will have a theoretical perspective on the American family and its qualities. Individuals, who favor legitimizing relationships between gay couples, consider it to be leaving people alone themselves. A few supporters feel that marriage may help fortify a more grounded soundness in gay couples by adding conclusion to the relationship of same sex associations. Since a similar sex relationships are not lawful as of now, gay couples are denied benefits which are allowed to wedded couples, for example, spousal migration benefits, arrangement as watchman of a minor, bolster installments in a separation activity, and settling on accomplice clinical choices. Most gay couples are likewise denied the advantages for their accomplices given by their managers like clinical and retirement benefits since they are not hitched. It was during the 1970s a few lesbians and gay men likewise started to advocate the lawful option to wed. In any case, the latest forward leap on sanctioning .

The land Essay Example For Students

The land Essay In the ongoing introductions we have viewed, a typical subject that was managed was the place that is known for every area. The reason for this shifted all through every introduction. A few gatherings utilized this to hint their writing and others utilized this to give a verifiable outline for the issues they talked about. That reality this happened helps bolster June Callwoods explanation, which says that what joins Canadian is endlessly more convincing than any noticeable differences. It shows that the connection and love that Canadians have for their property is the thing that joins them, in spite of the distinctions that seem to partition them. Most Canadian accepts that the locale they live in is the most lovely spot to live. Individuals experiencing childhood in the Rocky Mountains may go to the prairies and discover them exhausting and monotonous. In any case, an individual living in the prairies may feel that the capacity to see perpetually is the most excellent part of that locale. In the sonnet The Souris Sings by Katherine Buckaway, the creator discusses the magnificence of the prairies. She changes the generalization of the prairies being plain and exhausting by portraying the green moving slopes and the different natural life. It shows the pride every Canadian has in their territory. Not all Canadians fundamentally accept that the district the were conceived in is the most excellent. A few people may have an a lot more grounded connection to a district that is less recognizable to them. Robert Service discusses this inclination in his sonnet The Spell of the Yukon. The sonnet depicts the life of a gold digger in the Yukon who from the start is overpowered by the force and segregation of the North. However, as the sonnet proceeds, the characters encounters carry him closer to the land. This is valid for all areas. The land is the thing that gives an individual encounters that shape their lives. Individuals who consume quite a bit of their time on earth living in a solitary district are significantly impacted by their environmental factors. As a youngster an individual will encounter things that are regular in that locale. Experiencing childhood in these particular environmental factors will permit the individual to feel increasingly great there. Rita MacNeil, who experienced childhood in the Maritimes, has numerous melodies which talk about her home. In her melody, Home Ill Be, she sings about how wonderful her old neighborhood is and that she will consistently return. This association an individual creates to the land proceeds for the remainder of a their life. Despite the fact that every district in Canada has its disparities in culture, financial matters, and legislative issues, Canadians will alway share a typical love for their property. As indicated by Elizabeth Brewster, individuals are made of spots, and each spot brings fluctuating encounters which shape a people life. Consequently individuals love the land for giving them these chances and this is the thing that solidarities them at long last.

Robin Williams most bangarang bookish roles. - Book Riot

Robin Williams most bangarang bookish roles. - Book Riot I was in the locker room of my gym last night, putting away my water bottle, when I looked up at the wall-mounted TV and saw something ridiculous. It didnt make sense that Robin Williams could be dead. How could a person whose voice and face were such a part of my childhood be finite? He had to be hiding somewhere, impersonating a fictitious housekeeper or paying a visit to Never Never Land for an imaginary food fight with the lost boys. Or maybe he was just taking a nap in his magic lamp (iiiiitty bitty living space). I cant think of another actor who has embodied so many vivid characters, many of which came from books or loved books. Lets remember. Robin Williams, Dreams with Sharp Teeth, 2008. Williams appeared as himself in this documentary on writer and essayist Harlan Ellison. Andrew Martin, Bicentennial Man, 1999. Based on a short story by the esteemed Isaac Asimov. Chris Nielsen, What Dreams May Come, 1998. Based on the novel by Richard Matheson: an author who Ive never read, but who comes highly recommended by a fellow Rioter. Patch Adams, Patch Adams, 1998. Williams played the titular character in this movie based on the book Gesundheit: Good Health is a Laughing Matter by Patch Adams and Maureen Mylander. Professor Philip Brainard, Flubber, 1997. Goofy Flubber was based on a short story by Samuel W. Taylor called A Situation of Gravity. Osric, Hamlet, 1996. Based on a play by a guy named Shakespeare. Armand Goldman, The Birdcage, 1996. I was hoping I could justify including The Birdcage! It turns out the movie is based on a play by Jean Poiret. Alan Parrish, Jumanji, 1995. How terrifying and awesome was this movie? I havent seen it since I was 10, but thinking about it still gives me a visceral reaction of simultaneous horror and delight. The movie was based on a book by Chris Van Allsburg, also called Jumanji. Apparently theres talk of a Jumanji remake, which makes me roll my eyes. Why redo something that was perfect the first time? The Father, In Search of Dr. Seuss, 1994. I only just discovered that this movie exists. But given its subject matter and that it also features Patrick Stewart, Billy Crystal, Christopher Llyod and archival footage of Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, I am now officially curious. Daniel Hillard / Mrs. Doubtfire, Mrs. Doubtfire, 1993. Did you know Mrs. Doubtfire was based on a book? It was: Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine. Peter Banning, Hook, 1991. There arent many movies I have a deeper, wilder love for than Hook.   Williams plays Peter Banning, a grown-up Peter Pan who has forgotten his past. When Captain Hook finds a way to reach into Peters new life and steal something precious to him the stuffy, grown-up Pan must re-learn how to fly, both literally and metaphorically. If you havent seen this movie, you absolutely must watch it immediately. Unless you hate joy. Parry, The Fisher King, 1991. In The Fisher King, Williams plays a man enraptured by story of the Holy Grail of Arthurian legend, a story in so many books that its not even worth deciding which to cite. John Keating, Dead Poets Society, 1989. This movie is a lot of things, and one of those things is the love story between the written word and the readers whose lives it transforms. Its no wonder that this one in particular touches our bookish hearts. The Frog/Prince Robin, Faerie Tale Theaters The Frog Prince, 1982. When I was little, I had a VHS copy of this recorded from the TV. I didnt realize Robin Williams played the Frog Prince in my memory until I started writing this post. Dr. Malcolm Sayer, Awakenings, 1990. This Oscar-nominated movie is based on an Oliver Sacks book of the same name. I havent read Awakenings, but I have read Sacks The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, and its fascinating. Popeye, Popeye, 1980. This sailor man is best known from the animated cartoon, but he started out as a comic strip. A mere sampling of an incredible filmography from a remarkable man. Thank you, Robin Williams. Save

The Molting Process for Insect Growth

Molting,  known technically as ecdysis, is literally a period of growth for insects. In humans, an analogy can be drawn to molting as a period of personal transformation, such as the shedding of ones old self and the emergence of a new and improved person. Insects grow in increments. Each stage of growth ends with molting, the process of shedding and replacing the rigid exoskeleton. People often think molting is the simple act of an insect breaking out of its skin and leaving it behind. In truth, the process is complex and involves several parts. When Insects Molt After egg hatches, the immature insect feeds and grows. Its exoskeleton is like a shell. Eventually, the larva or nymph must shed its unyielding overcoat to continue its development. The exoskeleton which serves as its  external backbone is used for protection and support. Without an  exoskeleton, the insect could not survive. An old exoskeleton is shed when a new one is ready underneath, a process that can take days or weeks. Understanding the Exoskeleton To understand how molting occurs, it helps to know the three layers of the insect exoskeleton. The outermost layer is called the cuticle. The cuticle protects the insect against physical injury and water loss, as well as provides rigidity for muscle. It is this outermost layer that sheds during a molt. Underneath the cuticle is the epidermis. It is responsible for secreting a new cuticle when it is time to shed the old one. Underneath the epidermis is the basement membrane. This membrane is what separates the insect’s main body from its exoskeleton. The Process of Molting In molting, the epidermis separates from the outermost cuticle. Then, the epidermis forms a protective layer around itself  and secretes chemicals that break down the insides of the old cuticle. That protective layer becomes part of the new cuticle. When the epidermis has formed the new cuticle, muscular contractions and air intake cause the insect’s body to swell, thus splitting open the remains of the old cuticle. Finally, the new cuticle hardens. The bug squeezes out from the outgrown exoskeleton. The insect must continue to swell and expand the new cuticle, so it is large enough to allow room for more growth. The new overcoat is soft and much paler than the former one, but over a few hours, it becomes darker and begins to harden. Within a few days, the insect appears to be a slightly larger copy of its former self. Pros and Cons of Molting For some insects, a  big benefit to having a system of molting for growth is that it allows damaged tissue and missing limbs to be  regenerated  or substantially reformed. Complete regeneration may require a series of molts, the stump becoming a little larger with each molt until it is a normal or nearly back to normal size. A  major disadvantage to having to molt  as a system of growth is that the animal in question is entirely incapacitated during the process. An insect is completely vulnerable to a predator attack while undergoing molting.

Amending the Second Amendment - 1083 Words

On December 12, 2013, a heavily armed man walked into a small elementary school in Connecticut and opened fire, ending the lives of 26 children and teachers, not only shattering the quiet of the small town but leaving our nation lurching at the number of young lives lost. The horror of this event renewed people’s passion on both sides of the fiercely debated issue of gun control and brought the issue to the forefront of American politics once again. While no new gun control laws have been passed since this tragedy, the debate over how to interpret the 2nd amendment continues. Gun control laws are the government’s way of regulating the manufacture, sale, transportation, possession, and use of firearms. In our world today, we face the vast controversy of gun control and who should be able to possess a destructive firearm, and under what conditions. These laws differ significantly around the world, and in fact the laws in the United States vary by state. Supporters of strict gun laws argue the dangers of allowing citizens broad rights to possess firearms. Opponents claim that they wish to have a source of defense in their home, and also that certain regulations may violate their individual rights. Gun control laws are protected by the second amendment in the Bill of Rights, the right to bear arms. â€Å"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.† The bill guarantees Americans theShow MoreRelatedThe Resolved Issue Of The Constitution Essay1457 Words   |  6 Pageswith the federal constitution.† (U.S. Constitution, Encyclopedia of American Law and Criminal Justice, Revised Edition) The process that takes place to change or add an amendment requires, the amendment to start with in the house of representative such as the senate or the congress. Est 310.2.1-05 (Company Q) Free Essays

EST1 – Ethical Situations in Business A small local grocery stores disadvantages in a metropolitan areas EST1 Task 1 Being a small, local grocery store chain in a major metropolitan area does not come without its challenges. National and regional chains are frequently forcing small and locally owned stores to close their doors. For this reason, as well as the huge obligations to the social responsibilities required by their communities and customers alike pushes both the small business owner as well as the larger corporations to be able to adjust their organizations goals and objectives to balance not only their goal to be profit driven but to also be socially and ethically perceptive with the way they conduct business and operate their stores. We will write a custom essay sample on Est 310.2.1-05 (Company Q) or any similar topic only for you Order Now Recently Company Q has chosen to close two store locations that operated in areas where crime rates were statistically higher within the city. The store closures are being driven by consistent losses the stores experienced year over year. If the stores have consistently lost money year over year, we need to analyze the reasons as to why. To take the social responsible approach at analyzing this question; we would first need to understand our customer demographic for each of the geographical locations. For example, if one of our stores is located in a highly populated Hispanic neighborhood and we are promoting Ethnic Asian foods, we could not expect these foods to sell at the same rate as we would handmade corn tortillas. Taking an ethical and cultural marketing approach to sell foods that are Hispanic-centric strongly supports the business and ethical approach that would be needed for our store to successfully show a profit. When we stop to understand our customer demographics and their communities in which they live, we then can recognize what is needed for our business to prosper within the community. After many years of customer requests Company Q, began offering a limited selection of health conscience and organic products in their stores. Offering organic and environmentally friendly products in response to our customers’ requests is a large step in forming a social contract with our customers instead of merely offering then what we feel they need. Soliciting feedback from our customers provides us with the means to understand what they want and what they need. Offering a high end products to our customers that neither have the financial ability to afford the high costs that accompany high end products, nor do they have the desire to purchase these products to help Company Q’s bottom line. In fact it will actually drive our results in the opposite direction. Our product choices must be targets to the consumer within our communities. Ethnic foods must be customary to the neighborhoods in which they are being offered. The marketing of our stores in cultural or racially specific communities must be stocked with the products that meet the needs of our customers in those communities. It takes very minimal effort to understand our customers, but that minimal effort makes the difference between a store being successful or failing. There are multiple sources that can be used to help us understand our customer’s cultural and social desires. To gain a simple understanding of the cultural needs for a Hispanic – centric neighborhood can begin with a simple Google search on Hispanic Market Research. For example when preforming the following Google search we learned. â€Å"Market Research Hispanics† â€Å"According to the U. S. Census Bureau, the terms Hispanic (and Latino) refer to people â€Å"whose origins are from Spain, the Spanish-speaking countries of Central or South America, the Caribbean, or those identifying themselves generally as Spanish, Spanish-American, etc. Origin can be viewed as ancestry, nationality, or country of birth of the person or person’s parents or ancestors prior to their arrival in the United States. † Hispanics can be of any race. There are more than 48 million Hispanics in the United States. Latinos now account for 16% of the American population. The 32 million Latinos of Mexican origin account for around 66% of the Hispanic population. Hispanics accounted for more than half of all of the growth in the U. S. population that occurred between 2000 and 2009. Latinos also are expected to be responsible for more than half of the growth in the U. S. population between 2010 and 2015. With an estimated buying power of $616 billion, Latinos of Mexican heritage represent the single most influential segment of the Hispanic market. Mexicans in the United States account for 59% of all Hispanic buying power. On a per capita basis, however, Cubans are the most affluent of the major Hispanic population segments. Their per capita buying power is substantially higher than that of Mexicans ($32,724 vs. $19, 426). The vast majority (92%) of Hispanics under 18 were born in the United States as were about 47% of those 18 and over. Mexicans are most likely to be U. S. -born. More education leads to higher-paying jobs and increasing affluence among high-acculturation Latinos. High-acculturation Hispanics are more likely than their low-acculturation counterparts to work as managers and professionals (19% vs. 6%). They are twice as likely to have a household income of $75,000 or more (37% vs. 19%) and are much more likely to own their home (62% vs. 40%) (Census Bureau, 2012 www. marketresearch. om ). † Preforming a simple marketing search on the Hispanic cultural give us insight as to how we can begin to market and set ourselves apart in the marketplace. How we can currently target and begin to build a marketing strategy that will ensure the future growth and the economic sustainability of our stores within a Hispanic – centric neighborhood. Currently Company Q operates under the policy of disposing of day-old products, this a perfect example where our management team is missing out on a great public relations and corporate social responsibility opportunity. When approach by the area’s food bank to donate day-old products that would otherwise been thrown away, our management team declined. Management being more focused on the possible loss of revenue due to the potential increase in fraud and stealing that could be done its employees who could claim that that they were donating the food. One thing that we need to understand it the actual cost associated with and or the actual / perceived benefits. Our company will write –off any product that needs to be disposed of due to the shelf life expiration date. The products are disposed if in a dumpster and therefore currently ends the usefulness of the product from the company’s perspective. If we are paying for the products by weight or volume, we will incur a greater disposal rates from the waste removal company for the disposal of those unsellable products instead of donating them to a local food bank. This concern of a possible increase in expenses does not begin to look at the tax benefits that could be received by the donating of the product to a local food bank as well as other possible economic impacts that this policy can have on the economy of our community. Another concern that we need to be aware of is the impact that our policy to throw away on day-old products will have on employees moral. If we’ve communicated to our employees that we will not be socially contentious to our local communities, then what is the message that we are delivering to our employees since they are part of our communities. How will they relate that to how valued they feel as an employee for Company Q? In our technology and media driven society it would e foolish not to except a socially aware employee or customer to film the disposal of the food that we may have not been able to sell, but it could easily be donated to our local food banks to help those in need. The potential of the negative publicity and feedback from such an event would be devastating to a small chain stores such as ours. The above mention concerns addressed not only some of the potential financial impacts but also the possible social capital losses that we could face in our current po sition. Thankfully, we do not need to pay out much financially or in employee efforts to make a substantial difference in our stores and neighborhood communities. One delivery van can be used at the end of each day to deliver the products that would have otherwise been thrown away to our local food bank. The food can be unloaded by the food bank staff while the food bank manager shares with the Manager or Supervisor of our company the impacts that this donation will have on the community. This same information can be taken back and share with the store employees. The minimal time spent delivering and unloading the products daily at the local food banks in a minor change in the daily operations for the store, but will have an overall impact to the community that will consistently strengthen our relationship within in the local communities, our relationships with our employees as well as enhancing our brand across our chain of stores. Why Prohibition is Not the Answer free essay sample

Examines the case for drug prohibition against the backdrop of the historical examples of alcohol and cigarette prohibition, arguing that complete prohibition is unlikely to succeed today. This paper addresses the common question in public policy on how best to restrict the proliferation of addictive substances in society: drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. The author examines the policies ranging from complete prohibition to the legalization of non-addictive drugs. This paper draws on the historical examples of alcohol and cigarette prohibition to argue that the complete prohibition of drugs is not the best answer to the drug problems faced by significant numbers of Americans. Many legislators advocate the prohibition of addictive substances as the best way to limit their consumption and the myriad social and economic ills that accompany it. This zero-tolerance ideal was the basis of the noble experiment of alcohol prohibition during the 1920s, the ban on cigarettes in Canada and 15 American states at the beginning of this century, and, perhaps most pertinently, the War on Drugs that we currently find ourselves embroiled in. This song can be interpreted in many different ways, but it’s almost always recognized as being about drugs, specifically heroin. Though Smith only became addicted to heroin in his later life, he writes about drugs, alcohol, and addiction in many of his songs, from his first album on. â€Å"Needle in the Hay† seems to be about a girl who is addicted to heroin, and is in a relationship with a guy who is beginning to use heroin himself. I chose this song because it’s beautifully written, and uses many interesting metaphors to help tell the story. The first line in the song is â€Å"Your hand on his arm, the haystack charm around your neck. † I think this is saying that she is beginning to become a bigger part of his life, but she is bringing her addiction into it also. â€Å"Strung out and thin, calling some friend, trying to cash some check. † The girl is thin from heroin use, as the drug causes loss of appetite, which leads to weight loss. She is stressed from not having the drug, so she calls a friend, hoping she can buy more. â€Å"He’s acting dumb, that’s what you’ve come to expect. † Her boyfriend knows what is going on with her, but he plays dumb and doesn’t acknowledge it. She knows that he knows, but doesn’t say anything. The song then goes to the chorus, which just repeats â€Å"Needle in the hay†, referring to the hidden, unspoken addiction(s) in the relationship. The next verse begins with â€Å"He’s wearing your clothes, head down to toes, a reaction to you. † I don’t think that he is literally wearing her clothes; I think it is a metaphor meaning that ever since he’s been with her, he’s becoming just like her, especially after acquiring the addiction. â€Å"You say you know what he did, but you idiot kid, you don’t have a clue. The girl thinks that she knows the guy so well, but she does not realize the severity of the situation, or the fact that she has brought this on him. â€Å"Sometimes they just get caught in the eye, you’re pulling him through. † Sometimes people just get caught up in bad things, and she’s only worsening his problem. In the third verse, the point of view seems to shift from third person into the girl’s eyes. â€Å"Now on the bus, nearly touching this dirty retreat. † The girl is going to get drugs, and she’s almost there. She knows what she’s doing is wrong, but by now it almost feels like a comfort, or an old friend. Falling out, 6th and Powell, a dead sweat in my teeth. † She’s now walking to the place where she’s going to get her drugs. The â€Å"dead sweat in my teeth† part is a bit hard to understand but I have a few ideas. It may just be symbolizing her craving, her need for the drug. It may be referring to the actual condition of her teeth, as heroin can cause teeth rotting and gum disease. Or, it could be a combination of both. â€Å"Going to walk walk walk, four more blocks, plus the one in my brain. Down, downstairs, to the man, he’s going to make it all okay. † Her addiction is so serious that she is willing to walk blocks and blocks to get to th e drug. She feels that once she gets it from the dealer, she will feel better and everything will be okay. She is dependant on the drug. â€Å"I can’t beat myself, I can’t beat myself, and I don’t want to talk. I’m taking the cure, so I can be quiet whenever I want. † She has gotten to the point where she no longer has faith in herself, and she needs the drug to feel okay. She’s so focused on the drug and feeling better that she’s becoming withdrawn and shutting the rest of the world out. She’s using heroin to ease her pain; she thinks that it will make things easier. â€Å"So leave me alone, you ought to be proud that I’m getting good marks. She wants everyone to leave her alone. She wants to keep her problem a secret, so she tries to hide it by doing well in other aspects of life, perhaps school or work. I think that this song’s view of addiction and the problems that come with it is simply brilliant. It shows the depen dency on the drug, the user’s personal feelings and hopes for what the drug will do, and the way drug addiction can affect relationships. What I learned in health class helped greatly with this project. I have loved this song for a long time, and getting this in-depth look at it by doing the analysis has only made me love and appreciate it more.

Smoke after explosion Essay Example

Smoke after explosion Essay Example Smoke after explosion Essay Smoke after explosion Essay Smoke after explosion disappears. People are terrified by the gangs in guns. Suddenly, salience covers the whole scene. A man with a cape on his back appears binding those gangs. This is commonly seen on television on our favorite cartoon show or a television series that tackles about superheroes. Man on distinctive costume will suddenly come out when a disaster or an accident happen. Those supernatural beings that possessed super powers are often the content of our minds during childhood years and even during adolescence. We even act like them; portraying their image, imitating their costumes and etc. With these we forget for awhile our problems, the problem of the society and etc. We sometimes wish that they exist. Even as how many times we wish or believe they’re real, we still cannot deny the fact that they were only created to entertain us. They were only created by writers to play on our minds. But even though they were created for that purpose, they still play a great r ole in molding our minds and beings. We cannot deny that we can get lessons from those superheroes that we admire. Superheroes do not have even bad habits; thus they play a great role in the area of character building. As I watch the stars at night I always think of creating my own superhero character. Its image would have the taste of a typical Chinese character or Japanese perhaps. It would have a height of no more than an ordinary man; a height of five feet and seven inches maybe. With it he cannot be feared by the people or the young ones. Its skin would be as that of a cut tree trunk. If you combine the color brown and the white, it will give a somewhat flesh color; and that’s the color of the character. Its eyes would be as tame as a lamb where you cannot see or predict his capability of killing; eyes that is as clear as the sky. Its hair would cover half of its face such that when a wind blows it will only move like stalks of the rice. Superheroes are known for their distinctive costumes. Many of them are remembered due to their appearances. Like Spiderman, he is known for his â€Å"spider-like† costume. For my superhero character, what I have in mind is to fit his costume with the image that he has. It would have a dress of white color. It is not totally fit to his body so that it will just swing together with the wind. If you look at the costume of the main character of the Japanese aneme Samurai X it will be like that but will differ only in color and the textile to be used. I would prefer to have him a costume that is somewhat half transparent. Also it the costume would reach his feet, I mean it will be such like a whole dress. Near the button of its dress would have a line colored red. It will serve as an indicator that despite of his purity, he is still capable of killing (but of course those who are enemy of the society only). On the issue of its character, he will be as good as the other superheroes. He will help the people when trouble comes. He will appear but people will not know where he comes from. He will only be seen when trouble comes. He will not often talk. When people admire or say thank you for his help, he will just give back a smile saying you’re welcome. I want it that way so that people will wonder and question his existence. It may be like the other superheroes but I like that type of character. I always want to have that kind of stuff in me. Since I was a child I want to be that kind of character. Well anyway, it may sound strange but that makes my superhero unique. This character that I’ve created has of course a job like an ordinary man. He is a teacher in high school. He will be often recognized for his excellence in teaching and in molding the character of the children or the students. Students who possess bad character would be tamed when he talk. He is humble and a do wn-to-earth teacher. He still will not talk often but only does when it’s necessary and when his words are important. With that character many will love him but he will have no close friends. He is often alone together with his laptop. With that many parents will admire his attitude and his talent in music. He can play any instrument and when he plays, everybody will stop from working just to listen to the melody of his pieces. Like other superheroes he will fall in love with a woman who sells flowers on a street near the school. The girl’s beauty would capture the heart of every man but it will not be recognized due to the nature of   the job she has and due to the dirt that cover her face during works. A man who only has good intention will love her. That’s why I like her to be the partner of my character. Of course, the woman did not know the feelings of the superhero character. They will be as good as friends. In fact this is the only friend that the character has. They will be seen on street before the teacher goes home. The girl will love him too but secretly. In other words they will have the same feelings but nobody will dare to tell it and they will keep on hiding it as much as possible. On the other hand, his super power will be beyond limits. Due to his talent in playing instruments his super power will come out when he play his flute. It is not like any other flute. It will have a hole of five and is made of bamboo. Its melody will be the greatest melody you’ll ever hear. When he will play that flute a wind will cover his whole body. It will be like a whirlwind surrounding him when he does it. It will make his hair and his costume glaze on the touches that the wind do. Another power that he possesses is the blue flame he is able to produce. He can produce it whenever he wants it. When the blue flame and the power of the flute will combined, a supernatural power will occur. The flame will serve as a whirlwind that will burn every bandit he wants. Despite of his super powers his humility will still be seen. A tame lamb can still be acknowledged but his identity will be a mystery for the people. He is also capable of fighting using bear hands. He’s spee d will not be predicted because of the soft character that he has. He has also a strength that nobody has. Young people will admire him due to his capabilities and his character. He will be the headlines of every newspaper. His existence will be a mystery because of some factors. He will live in an isolated place. His house will be that of an average professional. He will live alone. Outside his house grew a big tree such that its branches will shade the whole house. Birds will perch on the tree. They will build their nests. No pets will live with the character except the wild birds that he fed every morning. Near its house is a stream that will serve as a water source for him and the birds. His electric supply comes from a turbine on the stream. In other words he utilizes the water source to convert it into an electrical energy. He will have no appliances and gadgets except for his laptop that will be used for his profession. The society that we have right now is somewhat the society that we never dreamed of; killings, terrorism activities, explosions, political problems and etc. are commonly seen on television news. The superhero that I’ve created will solve some of the problems. He will fight against terrorists. He will help the people when calamities occur. Because he is a high school professor he can help in cultivating young minds and teaching them the right attitude and perspective. He will be against drug addiction and will help the government in solving those problems. One thing I think why I choose him to be a teacher because I believe that those people who are involve in criminal activities (this includes corruption and other crime) are the ones who lack the guidance of the adults. We cannot deny that many factors affects the minds of the children but that kind of attitude that my superhero has will be a great in achieving the desired character that we want for our children. If we think for the existence of our superheroes we can claim that the problems will be eradicated. It’s nice to know and imagine the life and the society that we have if they exist and it is even more exciting if we are one of them. As what I’ve mentioned above, they are part of our lives. Superheroes may not exist in reality but they exist in our hearts. Work cited: Superhero (2007). Retrieve on April 13, 2007 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero

How the Death Penalty Effects Family Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

How the Death Penalty Effects Family - Essay Example It is at this point that family members become devastated, hopeless, and left with the feeling of not being in a position of control to eradicate the sentence. Generally speaking when there is a death involved, the people that stay behind are the ones that suffer and morn. They are the ones that maintain the sense of, if I could have done more and what if? They are the ones that need professional help during the justice process, in this case, during the time of sentencing, and after the criminal’s departure. It is an even more a complex situation when inmates are innocent and placed on death row. In some cases they have been placed on death row and because their lawyers could not find the way to defend them or because of a lack of economy, they were put to death. It is even more detrimental when the family members of the convicted have to turn him/her in, to the authorities and when the family members are misled by the authorities in giving information on how the trial will be handled. This is the case of the Unabomber family members. They were told that Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, would be treated from a humanistic point of view since he suffered schizophrenia, a mental illness. It was handled in this way only until his arrest. When he was arrested all officials looking into the case and wanted a person identified of these actions arrested, changed their modus operandi. They were no longer the humanistic types of persons who proceeded with the case. The focus of the Justice Department was refocused, â€Å"†¦on the goal of taking a human life† (Kaczynski, 2007). Ted ´s family questioned the prosecutors ´ in change of continuing the case, given another set of rules. They were overwhelmed about this turn around. Kaczynski (2007) thought of the ramifications of this change of thought from the Prosecutors ´ office and how this would discourage other families in following Ted’s family example

Race to the Top Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Race to the Top - Research Paper Example The assessment was supposed to be common for everyone throughout the state for purposes of uniformity. Disabled students were considered so they could also participate in the program. Those with the language barrier especially in English were given special accommodations. The program was meant to measure certain standards that previous programs could not. The main aim was to make scoring uniform so that colleges could use the same results for placement purposes. The discussions of the pros and cons of that program are meant to help us decide on whether the program was effective or not. Cons The first issue is that the program applies the use of multiple-choice questions in their assessment. In as much as such kind of questions reduce subjectivity when marking and scoring, they have been shown to narrow the curriculum. In addition to this, scanty reading and guesswork is highly used when answering such questions leading to untrue scores. It is impossible to tell what a student knows a nd what concepts were never understood. There was the introduction of performance tests in the 1990’s to help improve on the programs. These kinds of assessment included doing practical work, science experiments and extended essays, which enabled the student to apply theory into practice. This was to be seen as a success, but a problem arose in reliability of the scores; score results in some places could not be used to make any important inference. The tests were made of fewer questions and this meant that the area covered was not as extensive as any test should. The seriousness of the validity of performance tests was so vast that by 2002, only a few such kind of tests were given. Seeing all these disadvantages, the federal funding decided increase the number of tests and instead use a range different types of assessments. Nevertheless, this would increase the total cost of developing the tests and even scoring. It was also seen that teachers are forced to pull out of schoo l to score the tests and the inability of such teachers to engage in other activities that foster professional development. Teachers are bound to learn more during their first scoring exercise but this would change over time because of the teacher’s knowledge that scores are compared. In as much as there is professional improvement in instructions given to class, it is very hard for a teacher to change instructions that will cater for the unique needs of each student. In cases where a student was required to express what they know like in performance tests, language and inability to write essays was a hindrance to the accomplishment of many students. Apparently, only valid test scores can be used to make inferences, valid tests are those that give the same result if issued to the same group for a second time. However, such scores cannot be used to test teacher and principal quality because they do not directly do so. This may seem like very small areas but in terms of test re liability and validity, a problem in a small area is bound to make the whole test insignificant. Pros In order to know if an assessment system works, it is important to subject it to rigorous effectiveness exercises. Also for validity, it is important to make tests uniform and to standardize the conditions under which every test is given (Dietel 4). This kind of system enabled educators to perform the two exercises

Personnel Management and HRM

Personnel Management and HRM Personnel management is a type of Human Resource Management. This area of management is concerned about workers and staff of the organization. They are responsible for recruiting and staffing of employees in an organization. Its features include: Organizational management Personnel administration Manpower management Industrial management The term personnel Management and Human Resource management can be called as the same process having two names. In todays world Personnel management is known as human resource management which came into effect during the 1970s and got the acceptance in 1989.Both terms however, referred to the same thing; the personnel manager who work for a company represent that companys human resources. Although Human Resource Management department did not exist in the 1940s, but many Human Resource practices and programs that we see today emerged in the earlier times. Human Resource Management (HRM) previously known as personal management, deals with formal system for the management of the employees within the organization. HR mangers have many things to do and think regarding their workers. These concerns include how to manage layoffs, address reduced employee loyalty, and create a well trained highly motivated work force through training, capable of higher productivity with high quality. Manage and increase diverse workforce and contain health care cost. In 1970s, the job of the HR manger was to keep their companies out of court because at that time the government set many regulations regarding the work. In the 1980s HR mangers had to address staffing costs related to mergers and acquisitions and downsizing. The economic issues related to an increasingly global and competitive workplace characterize the 1990s Shifting from Personnel Management to HRM: The most important role of HRM can be from the transformation of the personnel management function from concentrating on employee welfare to managing workforce in a way, that meet organizational and individual goals and providing employees with internal and external rewards. Therefore, today Human Resource Management (HRM), previously had known as personal management, deals with formal system for the management of the people within the organization. Many well-known companies report that they are trying to transform their workforce into a source of competitive advantage. Stages of shifting of Personnel Management to HRM: Firstly, Effective HRM focus on linking HRM problems to the overall strategy of the organization, the most effective HRM will design policies and practices for such corporate policies and strategies which can change an organizations culture Secondly, building strong cultures is a way of promoting particular organizational goals, strong culture is aimed at uniting employees through a shared set of managerially set of values (quality, service, innovation etc.) Thirdly, the attitude that people are a variable cost is ineffective HRM, replaced by the view that people are resource and that as social capital can be developed and can contribute to competitive advantage. It is accepted that competitive advantage is gained through well-educated and trained, motivated and committed employees. Fourthly, the view that the interests of employees and management or shareholders are divergent which was substantially true in the past is giving way to the view that this need not necessarily be so. Shift of personnel management to HRM took place in three stages: 1. Records and Administration 2. Accountability Regulations 3. Competitive Advantage 1. Records and Administration: In first stage the primary activities, which were carried out by personnel department, were, Planning Company picnics Scheduling vacations, Enrolling workers for health-care coverage, planning retirement parties, increase diverse workforce and contain health care cost. 2. Accountability Regulations: During this stage primary framework of rules and regulations started emerging in the organization. In 1970s, the job of the HR manger was to keep their companies out of court. In the 1980s HR mangers had to address staffing costs related to mergers and acquisitions and downsizing. 3. Competitive Advantage: The aim of this shift stage is from merely securing compliance to the more ambitious one of winning commitment. The employee resource, therefore, becomes worth investing in, and training and development thus assume a higher profile. P 2: -Assess the role, tasks and activities of the human resource practitioner HRM plays a very important role in the success of every organization especially big organization where it is difficult to manage all the activities. HRM is also developing and maintaining a quality of work life thats make employment in the organization desirable. It provides well trained and multi-skill employees. One of the most important functions of HRM is that it brings strategic integration. To integrate all the functions from top management to lower management. Integrate them at one specific point that all functions are interrelated. The policies of HRM are structured in such away which allows maximum flexibility and because of flexibility it can bring innovation because innovation is also very important for the success of an organization like that of specialized cycle. There motto is innovation or die. HRM also force on better quality because of the best quality it can survive in the market. Because with the industrial revolution there when new competitors enter in to the market the old competitors stress on quality in order to show that they have a competitive edge. The HR Manager has an important role in developing and reviewing policies, practices and later referring them to senior management for decision making. The HR Manager generally educates staff through applied theories and retraining them with skillful training for line managers. The HR Manager provides support and guidance to those employees which are involved in unwelcome actions. HR Manager is responsible to find such people whose abilities are competent with the nature of business in which the organization is involve. HR Manager conducts job analysis, recruitment and selecting processes effectively and efficiently which helps an organization to hire capable people. HR Manager is responsible to increase the skill and knowledge level of the employees in order to improve their performance level. It is not obvious that one strategy regarding improving performance level which works for one organization will also work for others HR Manager has a key role in appraising an employee. Through appraising the HR department can judge employees performance. A performance appraisal compares every employees real performance with the benchmarks of standards i.e. appraising employees help the companies in evaluating its employees. HR Manager is responsible to make sure that its policies are competent with the government rules and regulation so that the government shouldnt take the company to court. Secondly it is the ethical responsibility of the organization that it should work under the premises of government laws. The HR Manager builds a competitive edge because conceptually HRM is a strategy of using human resource. Now a day if a company wants to build a competitive edge over its competitors so it has to be very good in managing its human resource because it is the human who use all other sources of production. HR Manager is responsible to make such an environment to make employees effective and efficient to adapt the changing of technologies to perform the operations. Now a days planning is needed for all the functions and actions of the organizations. Building strategies is one of the core purposes of planning. As human assets are considered the keys to business success so while planning and building strategies it is very important to integrate the strategies regarding human resource with over all corporate strategic planning so that the success can be achieved. An Ideal HR Manager Generally HR Manager should perform such activities like planning, directing, and coordinating human resource management actions of an organization to develop the strategic usage of human resources and to continue functions such as recruitment, employees training, planning, employee compensation, and employees performance appraisal. HR should be a Profit Centre which refers to a part of a corporation that directly adds to its profit. Organizations may be organized in terms of profit centers where the profit centers revenues and expenses are held separate from the main companys in order to determine their profitability. We can justify this that recruitments, staff settlement, training and other things that they do should be profitable for an organization. They need to reduce administration cost through proper planning for example providing transport facilities, coffee, tea, lunch expenses, other bonuses lead to higher administrative cost. It will help them to avoid wastage of resources. They need to conduct Performance Appraisal properly which refers to as a method by which the job performance of an employee is evaluated (generally in terms of quality, quantity, cost, and time) typically by the corresponding manager. They should provide their employees compensation which refers to as a systematic approach to providing monetary value to employees in exchange for work performed. Compensation may achieve several purposes assisting in recruitment, job performance, and job satisfaction. They need have good relationship with different departments and try to keep themselves up to date from their activities and performances in order to prevent miscommunication and other disputes. P3: Evaluate the role and responsibilities of line managers in human resource practices? Line manager is person who deals with the workforce directly. Line manager plays important role in the success of HR manager. Line managers play vital role in terms of implementing HR policies and practices such as, disciplinary handling, absence management, Training and appraising employees. Line managers now have a greater involvement in the recruitment and selection process from the outset.ÂÂ   Alongside the HR manager, line managers are now typically involved in briefing the recruitment agency, writing the advertisement, short listing and interviewing they then make sure that recruitment is right. HR manager gets staff information from the line manager, for example if the employees are not working properly or they dont come regularly, these line managers inform the HR manager to take proper actions. If some workers are not performing well then HR manager consults line manager for providing them training in order to develop the skills and techniques of their employees and th en appraising those employees who are working well in order provide them with equal growth opportunities. Some researches have found that where employees feels positive about their relationship with their line managers they are more likely to have higher levels of job satisfaction, commitment and loyalty which are associated with higher levels of performance, for example taking care of employees health and hygiene factors will address employees absenteeisms and hence increase their motivation. As well as line manager helps HR manager in providing employees other fringe benefits such as free medical, transport and free education for employees children and treating every in the same way will increase their loyalty towards their organization and hence, it will address the discipline problems. Therefore, the involvements of line manager in HR practices improve their activities further. M1: Discuss how the concepts of PM and HRM are practiced in an organization? We have selected UFONE as an organization. As we all know that Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Limited (PTCL) that started its operations in January 2001 under the brand name UFONE. As a result of PTCLs privatization, UFONE became a part of the Emirates Telecommunication Corporation Group (Etisalat) in 2006. (Referenced from: http://ufone.com/about.aspx ) They have got large human resources in their Peshawar branch office. They have a human resource department in Islamabad to guide their employees and provide those facilities and comfort. In this company there are several departments such as sales department, customer care department, finance department, marketing department, corporate department etc. In UFONE Human Resource Department has individual relationship with each department. In UFONE the roles and responsibilities of Human Resource Management Department which was previously known as Personal management in recruitment process is given below: Before hiring new employees the HR department ensures that whether there is a need to hire a new employee for the particular job. The recruitment in UFONE is of both internal and external nature. Internal Recruitment In this case the employees already in the organization are encouraged to fill the vacant position. The HR department and other senior department choose the best fit from the employees within the UFONE. After the promotion employees are sent for further training. Internal recruitment motivates the employees to perform well and produce good results. It also creates a healthy competition within the staff of UFONE. External Recruitment If the HR department of UFONE feels that there is no one in the company who can fill the vacancy then they recruit from external sources. First they select some supervisors with whom the new people will work in order to form a panel of people who will interview applicants. UFONE has a data base system i.e. HRMS (Human Resource Management System) for its current applicants as well for the future employees. People just drop their CVs there and in case some vacancy occurs HR department call them for an interview. UFONE also advertise internally for recruitment purpose, because their current employees pass this information to their friends and families. UFONEs HR management has the service of internal flow, web designer, and Eveready media in order to post their advertisement. They also have eCVs format in which people put their CVs without moving and this system forward them to the HRM department. Recruitment procedure in UFONE For collecting application everything is computerized and it is very easy for them to reply too many applicants. They handle first those people who do not fit in their job and deal them carefully because they consider them their future applicants. Then they take on-line evaluation test (basically for testing personality and skills) and candidates that pass this test are called for an interview and the day for the interview is already set. Then the results are screened by an expert penal in order to reduce the chances of errors in selecting the candidates. After selecting the candidates then they are referred to accounts department for settling the pay and they give the new employees an orientation of what is his/her duties and responsibilities in UFONE. Then after some time they provide them training for enhancing their skill of communication with their client. The basic purpose behind all these recruitment steps is to hire a skillful workforce in UFONE who work toward department and the organizations goals and objectives and to get competitive advantage. M2: Make an effective judgment about PM and line manager responsibilities in studied organization. The line manager has key role in UFONE. They are responsible for dealing workforce directly and they are there to help the HRM department and others as well. The way line manager works with HR manager in selection processes, disciplinary handling, absence management, and training and appraising in UFONE which has been mentioned in P3. According to the Judgment given to us by the HR manager of UFONE, they are achieving their goals on time. He said our HRM department has good relationship with every department of UFONE such as marketing, corporate, finance, sales, customers care departments etc. The HR department plan rules and regulation and the way they want their employees to work then our line managers pass those information to the lower staff so that they perform accordingly within time in order to get organizational goals. Some time they work more than their required duty timing from 9am to 5pm and till 8pm so that they get their targets. But what we judged after studying UFONE i s even though they provide their employees all the monetary and non-monetary benefits a lot of employees from both managerial and non-managerial levels left UFONE just after few months of their joining. The major reason behind this is that sometime in order to achieve their targets in the season many people keep working more then their required duty timing of 9am to 5pm and continue till 8pm and employees find themselves without their social life. Another problem that we noticed was that there was lack of communication between sales departments and the marketing department. D1: Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of HR manager and line manager in the organization as compared to their ideal role. Here we would like to specify the problems or the area in which HR manager is lacking after studying UFONE. In this company communication between different departments is very bad for example an year ago their marketing department made an offer in their advertisement that customers can get UFONE Sims for free without informing their Sales department, that advertisement attracted the attention of every one, then every one rushed to get Sims for free, while they didnt had enough Sims to supply as consequences their image was badly effected and their Customer Care Department received thousands of complaints. We have held HR department for the problem of miscommunication between different departments because HR focuses on openness in communication between senior management and employees in different departments, results in improving employee engagement and their productivity this shows their focus is not to provide open communication. Another problem that UFONEs HR Manager is facing is t hat even though they provide their employees all the monetary and non-monetary benefits a lot of employees from both managerial and non-managerial levels left UFONE just after few months of their joining. The major reason behind this is that sometimes in order to achieve their targets in the season many people keep working more then their required duty timing of 9am to 5pm and continue till 8pm and employees find themselves without their social life. This problem shows that HR manager is not performing well because its not only money that is important to their employees they needed also to take care of employees by allowing them to go at 5pm so that they can spend time with their families. The ideal roles of their HR manager in UFONE should be the following: HR manager should build such communication system in which each department can communicate with each other so that marketing department increase demands of their customer by consulting the sales departments in order to make an effective advertisement for their product in this way each department will perform better. HR manager needs to have back up staff in season time where targets are high and with allotted time employees had to work over time for getting their targets. And provide them emergency leaves if the employees have emergency in their homes by doing this HR can stop their employees from leaving. D2: Suggest recommendations for realistic improvement against the defined Following are the recommendations for UFONE to carry out their human resource planning in a better way: The prediction of requirement and availability of the work force is considered an essential step in carrying out human resource planning for any organization. UFONE should do the forecasting keeping in mind the rapid changes in demands which has been taking place and should spend their time in finding best employees from service sector, which could be a source of competitive advantage for the organization. They should always look for hiring the quality workforce and this can be done effectively by keeping contacts with universities because fresh candidates no matters they are not experienced but they show enthusiasm and commitment in their early jobs to built a platform for their career. So they can hire the fresh candidates and should train them to assist the HR professionals. Moreover the initial step should be the establishment of the HR departments on regional levels because without proper HR professionals, qualitative human resource planning is not possible; this is discussed in detail in the upcoming topics. Recruitment and selection process has a pivotal role in making successful HRM policies. In case of UFONE before advertising any vacancy they should do proper job analysis which will lead to the development of an effective job description and job specification and will result in attracting potential talented candidates for the job. They should practice performance management policies, different incentives scheme should be introduced e.g. if a department within the office shows outstanding performance in generating more revenue then the rest of the areas or has performed well in reducing the complaints in that area then should be given some special incentives and should be provided companys certificate for good performance because a companys certificate means a lot to any employee. They should give all of them some role in decision making and should give them chance to achieve their full potential. Moreover job security should be given top priority because if the employee feels being in an uncertain environment and does not feel being a part of that company so he/she can never perform well, so in order to make them contribute effectively and to fulfill their responsibilities UFONE needs to work on job security. In addition, the employees should be promoted and given more benefits and greater responsibility based on their efficiency and experience. All this which will help them in keeping their employees loyal and committed and as a result employee turnover will be low. Proper training and development keeps an organization ready to face untoward situations and helps them in gaining competitive edge over its competitors. UFONE should review the performance of employees after every quarter for this purpose they should make the separate profile of each employee and their performance should be evaluated against the standard performance required for the success of the organization, this will help UFONE in finding out key areas for development for that particular employee and accordingly they can assess what his/her training needs are. Moreover in response to the case discussed above, they should invite all the employees for the training programs instead of inviting a couple of employees from every department because all of them deserve to improve and work on their skills and to get better training. Organization environment and structure is considered as the most critical factor for the success of the organization in case of UFONE the employees suggestions should be given due consideration while making the strategy this will make employee feel as a part of the organization and besides that flexible working hours and family friendly policies should also be introduced because they dont need only money in fact, they should take care of their personal needs as well. As earlier we have discussed that sometimes employee works till 8pm so this is against their own needs, they should set a proper schedule for taking out the work from employees.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee :: To Kill a Mockingbird Essays

To Kill a Mockingbird by Horton Foote To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel set over sixty years ago in a foreign country, yet it has always been both popular and respected. Consider why the novel is still relevant to readers in 2015. Refer closely to events and characters in the text. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ shows that even in the democratic society of the United States, there was discrimination and prejudice in the nineteen-thirties. Although this has been reduced there, in many other countries and regions these conditions still exist for minority groups. Consequently people from a different culture or those who live their lives differently from the majority are still looked down upon and regarded as outsiders. An example of this in the story is the Radley family who live in Maycomb. They have isolated themselves from the community by living strictly within the rules established by the father. The youngest son, Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley is locked up in his house after committing a small crime with his friends, and is blamed for nearly every small offence in Maycomb even if he had not committed anything, â€Å" any stealthy small crimes committed in Maycomb were his work.† In the court case later on in the book, Mayella Ewell, a young white woman, falsely accuses Tom Robinson, a ‘Negro’ of raping her. Tom Robinson is a married white man with three children and a respected member of the black church-going community. There was no circumstantial evidence to prove that he committed any crime. Despite this, the jury, consisting solely of white men, find him guilty, demonstrating their unreasonable bias against black people. Nowadays this is still occurring in many countries, and the story makes us more aware of how easily such racial intolerance can lead to totally false judgements. As Scout starts school, her teacher immediately dislikes her when she discovers that Scout was literate, and the author tells us â€Å" she looked at me with more than faint distaste.† Her teacher also disliked her because she spoke on behalf of Walter Cunningham, who would not

The Pathology of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease which affects the nervous system, namely the brain and spinal cord. It causes damage the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects nerve cells (Marieb, 2012). This damage slows down the process in which the brain relays messages to the rest of the body, leading to a variety of symptoms. Some of the most common include pain and numbness; fatigue; walking, balance, and coordination problems; bladder and bowel dysfunction; vision problems; cognitive dysfunction; emotional changes and depression (National Multiple Sclerosis Society, n. . ). Though the exact cause of MS is unknown, it’s widely thought to be an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body (Marieb, 2012). In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. The disease affects women more than men, often beginning sometime between the ages of 20 to 40. Recently, a study found that the incidence of MS appears to be higher in African American women than in caucasians, contradicting previous findings (Langer-Gould, Brara, Beaber, & Zhang, 2013). The disease is usually mild; however, some people lose the ability to write, speak and/or walk. No cause or cure for MS has been found. It remains a mysterious disease with no known pathogen or even known determinants of its severity and course. Three recently published studies say that salt may play a role in MS and other autoimmune diseases, although no study has found a direct link between high salt intake and increased incidence of MS. On a more peculiar note, researchers in England have been investigating how the month of birth (May and November) affects the chances of having MS later in life. It’s thought that it could have something to do with climate, sunlight, and intake of vitamin D (Disanto et al. , 2013). Many of the medicines available for use by MS patients only slow the progress of the disease. The most common treatments involve interferons. Interferons are a group of natural proteins (beta, alpha, gamma) that are produced by human cells in response to viral infection and other stimuli (NMSS, n. d. ). The FDA has approved three treatments in the form of beta interferon called Avonex, Betaseron, and Rebif. Beta interferon has been shown to reduce the number of exacerbations and may slow the progression of physical disability (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2012). When attacks do occur, they tend to be shorter and less severe. A synthetic form of myelin basic protein, copolymer I, has also been approved and it has few side effects. For more severe or chronic cases, an immunosuppressant treatment (mitoxantrone) has been approved. While steroids do not affect the course of MS over time, they can reduce the duration and severity of attacks in some patients. Spasticity, which can occur either as a sustained stiffness caused by increased muscle tone or as spasms that come and go, is usually treated with muscle relaxants and tranquilizers (NINDS, 2012). Patients can also help control symptoms through adequate physical activity and occupational therapy. Exercise, especially stretching exercises, helps relieve stiffness and promote flexibility and mobility. With advances in the understanding of the brain come advances towards developing a cure for Multiple sclerosis. Improved ability to create images of the living brain and spinal cord, new understanding of the brain's capacity for repair, and an overall accelerated pace of new discoveries about the cellular machinery of the brain have lead to new therapeutic strategies. These strategies include gene therapy, stem cell transplantation, and neuroprotection strategies (Joy & Johnston, 2001). Very recently, a biotechnology company developed a new MS drug based on peginterferon beta-1a. Studies of peginterferon beta-1a show that, when injected under the skin either every two or four weeks, reduced the relapse rate significantly more than placebo in a study of 1500 people with relapsing MS (Biogen Idec, 2013). Myelin and the cells that make myelin, called oligodendrocytes, are the main focus of many MS studies. Scientists and medical research organizations (such as The Myelin Project) are trying to find ways to stimulate myelin regeneration in patients by uncovering the mechanisms involved in myelin regeneration. Once discovered, they could eventually be translated to promising new therapeutic approaches to restore function in people with MS.
